About
Artists Statement
My work crosses from the large scale permanent sculptures to the intimacy of poetry, but is always drawn to the object. I enjoy the contrast of the exposed working practise and rules of the public realm with the ruleless privacy of the studio. They influence each other greatly.
I believe art inspires perspective and accountability through enhancing our perception of humanity, within our cultural historical context. To me this seems vital with the growing contrasts of society.
I want the observer to become conscious of themselves, as perceived in comparison to the object. This is why I am drawn to using the figure as a tool. To present a situation, that might create a personal enough reaction, to incite the viewer’s opinion.
The work is derived in the studio and is usually made in series. These are developed around an idea started as a poem or short statement. These ideas and thoughts are usually derived and inspired by medical information and psychological studies, and more recently imagining their potential effects in our futures. These pieces are explored through a domestic and often sculpturally classical approach to the manipulation of the figure as object. This studio work and explorations influence and informs the larger permanent works.
Often the large scale works start like a portrait of a place. A sculpture that physically reacts to its environment and affects its surroundings, ideally no longer being an object, its own area of effect reaching beyond the space it occupies. This becomes most apparent with permanent public realm works, as the aim is for them to become the space they inhabit and to be absorbed, to be integral to, and hopefully crucial to the identity of the place.
